Aware Adolescent Girls Action for Justice (AGAJ) sparks transformation in young minds across Kangra and Chamba, recognizing adolescence as a powerful time to shape voice, vision, and values. Through safe village-based learning spaces, girls explore gender, health, education, and rights and gradually play the role of a peer leader-breaking the silence challenging patriarchy with courage and clarity.

AGAJ trains peer leaders, hosts skill-building workshops in non traditional trades, and celebrates youth through vibrant events like Maa-Beti Melas and Kishori-Kishor Utsavs. From village libraries to Kishori Panchayats, it fosters democratic participation and bold leadership.

By blending mentorship, dialogue, and collective action, AGAJ nurtures confident, empathetic changemakers who speak up, think critically, and lead with purpose. It’s not just a program—it’s a movement of young voices rising for justice, equality, and community transformation.

Himalayan Daughters Rise for Education (HDR) is Jagori Rural’s bold initiative, launched in 2014, to ignite the dreams of young girls in Himachal Pradesh’s remote villages. Focused on those from marginalized communities, HDR breaks down barriers to education and personal growth through fellowships, mentorship, and dynamic training in gender justice and leadership.

Girls from Chamba and Kangra districts dive into workshops that build confidence, assertiveness, and awareness of their rights. With financial support and hands-on guidance, they’re not just pursuing higher education—they’re rewriting what’s possible.

HDR doesn’t just invest in girls—it invests in future changemakers. These resilient young women emerge ready to lead, inspire, and uplift their communities, creating a ripple effect of empowerment that stretches far beyond the classroom.

Aware Women’s Action for Justice (AWAJ)/ Nari Adalat /OBR is a bold, community-powered movement for gender justice—amplifying the voices of Dalit women, single women, persons with disabilities, and gender-diverse individuals. It empowers marginalized genders to claim their rights, resist violence, and lead change in homes and communities.

From safe spaces for survivors to grassroots Nari Adalats (women’s courts), AWAJ offers emotional support, legal aid, and pathways to self-reliance. Nari Adalat, initiated in 1995, empowers rural women as "Nyay Sakhis" (fiends of justice) to provide community-based justice. These women-led courts address gender-based violence and disputes through informal mediation and legal literacy, fostering empowerment, solidarity, and challenging patriarchal norms. Through the One Billion Rising campaign, JAGORI RURAL brings gender-based violence into public view and pushes for accountability across India’s justice system.

Workshops, counseling, and vibrant community events spark dialogue, healing, and leadership. Women emerge not just as survivors of violence — but as fierce protectors of human rights and inclusive decision-makers.

Health and wellbeing initiative transforms rural life in Kangra and Chamba by centering wellbeing, dignity, and inclusion. It uplifts women, youth, elders, and persons with disabilities through safe spaces, community care, and community engagement.

From health camps and resilience surveys to school partnerships and frontline worker training, the project strengthens local systems to respond to physical, emotional, and social needs. Women and girls gain access to counseling and reproductive health support; elders find companionship and care; youth build resilience through dialogue and skill-building; and persons with disabilities are included in every step.

By embedding wellbeing into village governance and daily life, the project fosters long-term resilience and equity. It’s not just about services—it’s about shifting mindsets, building solidarity, and preparing community representatives to take ownership of the program for a healthier, more inclusive future.

Sustainable Agriculture, Forest, and Land (SAFAL) is sowing the seeds of change in Himachal Pradesh—reviving organic farming and ancestral wisdom in the districts of Kangra and Chamba. With most families relying on agriculture, SAFAL tackles the harmful legacy of chemical farming by restoring soil health, food security, and ecological balance.

Farmer groups learn hands-on techniques like vermicomposting and bio-pesticide use, while celebrating traditional food festivals and conserving water and forests. Through Green Basket, initiative a local supply chain, farmers connect directly with consumers—earning fair prices and recognition for their organic produce.

Workshops, exposure visits, traditional seed-collection sessions, and forest festival, blend traditional knowledge and wisdom with scientific information, build collective initiatives and resilience. SAFAL links farmers to government schemes and embeds sustainable practices into everyday life.

This isn’t just agriculture—it’s a grassroots movement for healthier soil, nutritional crops,

Market linkages for communities, and a future rooted in reviving traditionally beneficial practices and sustainability.

Livelihood Initiative is a dynamic engine for rural transformation—building skills, generating incomes, and nurturing a sustainable environment across Kangra and Chamba. It educates communities through hands-on training in organic agriculture, vocational skills, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship, while tracking progress and offering ongoing mentoring.

Self-Help Groups (SHGs) gain strength through capacity-building in microfinance, group management, and collective production and action. Mobile Community Services (MCS) bring expert support directly to remote villages—offering counseling, skill-building, and business guidance on the go.

With at least 50% women’s participation and men stepping into non-traditional roles, the program fosters inclusive growth. Local knowledge shapes every step—from planning to implementation—while mapping and surveys ensure tailored support. Collaboration with Panchayats and stakeholders turns ideas into action, creating resilient, self-reliant communities ready to thrive.

Disaster Preparedness (TAIYAAR)

“If people had known what to do, maybe the losses would have been less” (participant)

“We want to create an eco-system that is supportive to each other” (Akshita)

Jagori Rural’s pilot project is helping high-risk villages in Himachal Pradesh get ready for floods and landslides—before disaster strikes. Focused on preparedness, it builds local capacity through hands-on training, community outreach, and technical skill-building.

Villagers learn evacuation planning, first aid, and emergency response, while Community Monitoring Committees coordinate efforts and guide action. Outreach materials in local languages make flood and landslide risks easier to understand, and Rural Resilience Trainers (RRTs) support implementation on the ground.

Technical workshops introduce hazard mapping and sustainable construction, ensuring communities are not just aware—but equipped. Pilot villages were chosen for both risk exposure and readiness to engage, making this a learning model for future scale-up.

This initiative is about readiness, collaboration, and practical solutions—bringing disaster preparedness into everyday village life.
