One Billion Rising (OBR)

“When I danced with hundreds of women in the village square, I felt my silence break. I am no longer alone. My story matters.” (participant)

“I want all violence to stop” (Manisha)

One Billion Rising (OBR) is a global roar for justice—launched in 2012 by activist V (formerly Eve Ensler) to end violence against women, girls, and marginalized communities. Named after the staggering statistic that one in three women worldwide face violence, OBR transforms outrage into action.

In India, Jagori has led the charge since 2013, with Abha Bhaiya as National Coordinator. As the OBR Secretariat, Jagori mobilizes one of the country’s largest gender justice movements—uniting voices across caste, religion, disability, sexuality, and region.

Through art, dance, street theatre, and mass mobilization, OBR sparks bold conversations and collective action. Local ‘Risings’ tackle intersecting issues like LGBTQ+ rights, labor justice, and environmental equity—turning public spaces into platforms for change.

OBR is not just a campaign—it’s a movement that reclaims dignity, demands accountability, and builds a culture of inclusion and courage.

Swara Mountain Arts Festival is where creativity meets courage—an annual celebration in Dharamshala that transforms art into activism. Since 2022, Jagori Rural and One Billion Rising have united national artists and local communities to spark dialogue, inspire action, and amplify voices for gender and environmental justice.

Swara pulses with dance, music, storytelling, theatre, and visual arts—each performance a call to reflect, connect, and rise. Workshops and interactive sessions dive deep into issues like women’s empowerment, ecological resilience, and social inclusion, blending tradition with innovation.

It’s more than a festival—it’s a movement of empathy and imagination. Swara invites communities to co-create change, celebrate diversity, and build solidarity through shared expression. From village murals to activist-led performances, it turns public spaces into platforms for transformation.
